If the thin dark heater line across the ceramic edge is unbroken and unscratched under a loupe, the head is a $40–750 spare part; a burnt-out gap or a scored groove makes it a $0 piece of alumina.
How to spot it
A flat white or grey ceramic bar 55–220 mm long, 10–25 mm wide and 1 mm thick, bonded to an aluminium heat-sink bar with a black epoxy ridge along one side holding the driver ICs. A fine dark line of heating dots runs the full length within ~1 mm of one edge, and one or two flat flex cables with gold ZIF fingers exit the back. Markings: Kyocera KCE-/KPW-, Rohm, TDK, Toshiba Hokuto, or an OEM number such as Zebra P1058930-009. Found at the top of the print path in receipt, label, fax and card printers.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $7.83 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.06 g = $7.83. A refiner paying $0 returns about 0% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.
Safe removal
Working temperature: No heat; head runs 150–350 °C in service
Remove it to sell it, not to scrap it. On Zebra desktop models open the clamshell, undo one or two Phillips screws on the head bracket, unplug the flex and ground strap and lift out; industrial models release a head-lift latch plus one thumbscrew. Never touch the heater line with bare fingers — skin salts corrode it — and clean only with 91%+ IPA on a lint-free swab wiped along the line, never across.
Hazards
NEVER grind, sand, file, saw, drill, abrasive-cut, sandblast, hammer, crush, shred, torch, melt or incinerate anything that might contain BeO. Sell or dispose of suspect parts intact. Broken beryllium parts are worth nothing; your lungs are worth everything.
NEVER dry-cut boards indoors without extraction.
Don't rush a hot engine. Nothing here is worth a hand.
NEVER dry sweep or use compressed air on a scrapping bench. HEPA-vac or wet-wipe only.
NEVER pour any of these down a drain or onto the ground. They are all regulated waste streams.

Is thermal printheads worth more working than as scrap?
The only rational path, by a factor of about 1,000. A tested-good pulled Zebra 203 dpi head is $40–150 against a scrap value that rounds to zero, and even a partially failed head sells $15–40 to people printing narrow labels. Whole working label printers resell better still at $300–700 refurbished.
