The bezel tells you which stream it belongs to — a BD-RE or Blu-ray logo means a $30 diode inside and possibly a $60 working drive; a plain DVD±RW or CD-ROM bezel means it is worth less than the box you would ship it in.
How to spot it
5.25 in half-height 42 × 146 × 165 mm or 12.7/9.5 mm slimline. The OPU/sled is the carriage on two rails: a die-cast or plastic block with an objective lens on a wire-suspended actuator, a flex ribbon and one to three diode cans underneath. Blu-ray sleds have two or three lenses (405 + 650 + 780 nm), DVD-only has two, CD-only one. Diodes are 3.8 or 5.6 mm TO-cans, often open-can in burners. Sled model numbers: BDR-209/205, PHR-803T, LPC-815/826, GGW-H20L, KES-400A/410A, SF-AW210.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $1.61 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.011 g = $1.44, Copper 16 g = $0.17. A refiner paying $0.2 returns about 12% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.
Safe removal
Working temperature: Diode desolder 300–320 °C, ≤3 s per pin
Eject via the emergency pinhole, then four case screws and two bezel clips; the sled comes out on two rail screws and one flex connector. Diodes are catastrophically ESD-sensitive — short all three pins with foil before desoldering, wear a wrist strap, and keep the short on until it is in a driver circuit. Desolder at 300–320 °C for no more than 3 s per pin; the junction dies above ~350 °C. Press-fit removal needs a 3.8 or 5.6 mm diode press, never pliers.
Hazards
NEVER look into a fibre end, a transceiver port or a patch panel port.
Don't let two magnet plates snap together across your fingers.
NEVER dry sweep or use compressed air on a scrapping bench. HEPA-vac or wet-wipe only.

Is optical drives & laser pickups worth more working than as scrap?
Modest for commodity drives, large for retro and diodes. A BDR-209 sold whole and working is $45–110 against $0.20 scrap — 200–500×; harvested as a sled it is ~$30. Retro SCSI and caddy-load drives are the real find at $60–250, i.e. 300–1,200× scrap, and vintage-computer restorers actively hunt them.
