LCD Panels (ITO / CCFL vs LED)

Backlight type decides your handling cost and you can settle it in one second: thin white glass tubes along the panel edges = CCFL = mercury = hazardous waste; a strip of small yellow-phosphor emitters on a white PCB = LED = ordinary.

How to spot it

Two sheets of thin glass bonded with polarisers in a stamped aluminium or steel bezel, with COF flex tapes along two edges running to narrow driver PCBs, over a stack of white diffuser and prism films. CCFL units have 2–4 mm white glass tubes with pink silicone boots and an inverter board silkscreened CAUTION HIGH VOLTAGE; LED units have long white strips with 20–100 emitters and no inverter. Pre-2009/2010 is CCFL, post-2010 almost always LED, but the panel label (LM230WF3, LTM240CT) datasheet is definitive.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $0.18 per pound of contained metal — Copper 17 g = $0.18. A refiner paying $0 returns about 0% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Working temperature: LED strip adhesive release 50–60 °C

Take the T-CON board — a few screws, one LVDS ribbon, one flex-lock connector — because it is the only board worth having. To de-lamp a CCFL panel work outdoors or under LEV in nitrile gloves and a P100: face-down, unclip the bezel, lift the film stack in recorded order, and lift each lamp out of its rubber boot without flexing it. Never shred, hammer or grind a CCFL panel. LED strips peel after warming the thermal adhesive to 50–60 °C.

Hazards

🌡 Mercury

NEVER vacuum a mercury spill — it aerosolises it. Use a mercury spill kit or sulphur powder, or call your local hazmat line.

⚡ Stored high voltage

NEVER short a large capacitor with a screwdriver. It welds the tip, blasts molten metal at your face, and can rupture the can.

🩹 Glass and sharps

NEVER blow on, wipe with bare fingers, or brush away cut optical fibre.

🧪 Automotive & battery fluids

NEVER pour any of these down a drain or onto the ground. They are all regulated waste streams.

☠ Lead — dust more than fume

NEVER dry sweep or use compressed air on a scrapping bench. HEPA-vac or wet-wipe only.

Before you scrap it

Weak — panels are fragile and model-specific and shipping losses kill the business. The exceptions are LED backlight strip sets at $8–25 for common TV models, T-CON and main boards as $15–60 repair parts, industrial/medical/marine transflective panels at $200–2,000, and CCFL lamps as spares for restorers.

The common trap

LCD panels are full of indium and indium is a critical metal, so panels are valuable. Both halves are true and the conclusion is still false — the indium in a 24 in monitor is worth about three cents, it is a 150 nm film chemically bonded to glass, and every published recovery route consumes more in acid, energy and glass disposal than the metal returns. The demonstrated plants survive on gate fees, not metal. Second trap: the boards and aluminium chassis, not the panel, carry all the value.
