ECU / engine control module

Pop the lid. A gold-plated edge-connector strip or gold-lidded ceramic ICs means send it to a refiner; a plain green board with black plastic ICs and tinned pins means sell it whole as a core. Age is the proxy — 1990s boards carry real gold, 2018-plus almost none.

How to spot it

Cast aluminium or stamped-steel box roughly 5×7×1.5 up to 8×10×2 inches, with one to three 40–150-pin connectors on one edge and an OEM label. Bosch 0 261…, Denso 89661-…, Delphi/GM 12…, Siemens/Continental SIM…. Found on the firewall or cowl, in the passenger footwell, inside the airbox area, on the inner fender, or bolted to the intake manifold.

Metal content

Silver0.45 g/lb
Palladium0.05 g/lb
Copper~20% of board mass

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $6.59 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.04 g = $5.22, Palladium 0.018 g = $0.74, Copper 30 g = $0.32, Silver 0.16 g = $0.30. A refiner paying $3 returns about 46% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Working temperature: Cold

Battery negative off first — hot-unplugging an ECU can destroy it and kill the resale. 8/10 mm sockets, Torx T20–T30, trim tools for kick panels. Release the connector levers; never pull on the loom. Keep the immobiliser, key and BCM together — a matched set is worth far more than the parts.

Hazards

☠ Lead — dust more than fume

NEVER dry sweep or use compressed air on a scrapping bench. HEPA-vac or wet-wipe only.

💨 Fumes, ventilation and open flame

NEVER burn boards, wire insulation or plastic. Ever.

☣ Beryllium copper

NEVER put BeCu in a grinder, a sandblaster, or a melt.

Before you scrap it

This is a core item. $40–350 working or as a rebuildable core against about $2 as scrap — 20–150×. Diesel ECMs (Cummins, Duramax, PowerStroke) run $200–900. Even a dead ECU is often $20–60 as a core.

The common trap

"ECUs are full of gold" — there's about $5 of gold in a box that sells for $150 working. The opposite mistake is just as common: people shred ECUs for the aluminium housing, which is worth 60 cents. The assay behind these numbers is single-source and skews high; halve it for anything built after 2015.

Questions

How much gold is in ecu / engine control module?

Gold: 0.11 g/lb of bare board. Silver: 0.45 g/lb. Palladium: 0.05 g/lb. Copper: ~20% of board mass. At current spot that is about $6.59 of contained metal per pound.

How do you identify ecu / engine control module?

Pop the lid. A gold-plated edge-connector strip or gold-lidded ceramic ICs means send it to a refiner; a plain green board with black plastic ICs and tinned pins means sell it whole as a core. Age is the proxy — 1990s boards carry real gold, 2018-plus almost none.

How do you remove ecu / engine control module safely?

Battery negative off first — hot-unplugging an ECU can destroy it and kill the resale. 8/10 mm sockets, Torx T20–T30, trim tools for kick panels. Release the connector levers; never pull on the loom. Keep the immobiliser, key and BCM together — a matched set is worth far more than the parts.

Is ecu / engine control module worth more working than as scrap?

This is a core item. $40–350 working or as a rebuildable core against about $2 as scrap — 20–150×. Diesel ECMs (Cummins, Duramax, PowerStroke) run $200–900. Even a dead ECU is often $20–60 as a core.
